Did you know that you can transfer your iTunes library to an internal hard drive? If you have small spaces and plenty of media that you just can’t save via iCloud, then you can move it to an inner usb drive. But I understand many people who have saved their music and movies on their desktop. I’m no longer using iTunes myself. I find it much simpler to stream iCloud content and to listen to my music via iTunes Match or Apple Music.If you do use iTunes to handle music not in iTunes or home video, etc, you really do have no choice but to save your content locally. I’ll show you how you can easily transfer the whole iTunes library to an outer drive in this article.
REQUIREMENTS
We must first verify that everything is saved locally properly before we transfer any data. Open iTunes and click iTunes– the preferences in the navigation bar on OS X or the little icon on the bottom left side of the windows. Press the Advanced tab to guarantee the location in the user – user name – music – iTunes – iTunes Media path of the default iTunes media folder.
If the location is different, then notice it, because you must go there if we need to move the data. Press and select the Library Organisation on the Mac, then press the navigation bar File. The navigation menu is first displayed on Windows with CTRL + B or the ALT key. When you do so, you create a dialog that consolidates all your media files. You only have to make sure everything is stored there before we migrate.
Set the file box together, and click OK. Once these two tasks are completed, we can proceed with the real library movement. Go out and connect to your external hard disk from iTunes. Now navigate your computer’s iTunes Music folder. Open the Finder for Mac users and click on Music to the shortcut list. C:UserUserNameMusic is the location in Windows listed in the Advanced tab. Inside, a folder named iTunes should be displayed. Continue to drag this directory to the inner hard disk root.
Depending on your iTunes library’s size and network speed, it will probably take most of the time. Note the copying, not removing, of the library. At a later point we shall remove the local copy. After the copy is complete, iTunes must be opened in a special way. Keep the Option key on Mac and click on iTunes from the dock. Hold on Windows the SHIFT key and open iTunes by double click. Before you load iTunes, you’ll have a dialogue.You want to click on Library selection from the two options. Go to the outside computer and open the iTunes folder. You want to select an iTunes.itl file, and then click Open.
ITunes loads the whole library when everything went well! All media files should be viewed and played. The local copy of the iTunes library might be deleted. First, you should close iTunes and then release your inner hard disk. Remove your computer’s entire iTunes folder. You can get an error signal that your library can not be discovered if you open iTunes without reconnecting the inner equipment. To leave, click OK. Connect to the iTunes drive, you’re okay. All in all, the method is pretty simple and no significant issues should occur.
Except that, all worked well. The documents were copied on my internal desktop rather than to my local computer when importing new media to my library.
